My Work

Joomla Web Development

I have been using the Joomla open source Content Management System to build websites since 2005. I am particularly proud of my own two commercial sites that I ram until selling them in 2011. The NZMac.com website featured in the book "Joomla! A User's Guide: Building a Successful Joomla! Powered Website" as an example of how to set up a site using Joomla. The following outlines the way in which the NZMac.com and NZiPhone.com websites were set up using Joomla.

Other Joomla Websites

The images below relate to a number of Joomla-base websites that I have built. Below that are some details about the sites and comments from some of the clients I developed the sites for.

Other websites

This page features images of the previous version of Bluengrey.com, which was all Flash-based (the structure of the site was very similar to the new site now) and some older websites that I developed using a Content Management System known as Xoops (www.xoops.org), which was the first open source CMS that I used. Xoops was great to learn, but I felt it was limited for the needs of clients at the time, so I moved on to Joomla at a later stage.

Adobe Connect and Masters research

The introduction and adoption of the Adobe Connect and Adobe Presenter technologies into Massey University is something I am exceptionally proud of achieving.

Adobe Connect - Case Study

The work that I did at Massey University bringing the Adobe Connect web-conferencing system into the University and how we were using it was featured as an Adobe Case Study on their website. I asked Dr Craig Prichard to be involved in the case study also. It was an interesting experiences even just getting the document written up (in terms of the various people we had to deal with) and it's been great to see a link to this case study feature in a few of Adobe's printed brochures.

Adobe Connect - Kuala Lumpur

Adobe kindly invited me to be a presenter at the Adobe Education Leadership Forum in Kuala Lumpur, April 2008.

eLearning website

By the time I started in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, WebCT (the University's Learning Management System at the time) had been in use in the University for a number of years. Surprisingly no-one had ever written online support material for staff on how to use WebCT. As part of my role as an E-Learning Facilitator, I developed and maintained an e-learning website to support staff. The site featured support for WebCT , Adobe Connect (formerly known as Macromedia Breeze - a flash-based presentation and virtual conferencing system) as well as information on other technologies and their use in e-learning.

DEANZ Article

In 2005 I wrote an article for the Journal Of Distance Learning entitled Learning Management Systems and the Realities of Using Open Source Software*. I wasn't very happy with the fact that the article was published with edits that hadn't been discussed with me, such as paragraphs being moved and words changed (such as "software's lifecycle" being changed to "software's lifestyle"...yikes!).

Multimedia Development

In 2005, The Department of Information Systems (now defunct) at Massey University contacted me and asked me to develop a Flash based presentation. The presentation was to be distributed on the web and via CD to inform prospective students about studying at Massey and studying Information Systems.

Database Development

I'm an experienced FileMaker Pro users. I've created a number of databases for my own personal use, including an invoice system, but the most challenging system I built was a cross-platform (Mac and PC) networked FileMaker Pro membership system developed for the Massey University Recreation Centre.

Game Development

Released in 1997, Monkey Shines by Fantasoft Software quickly become a well-loved shareware game on the Mac, receiving the Mac User "Nostalgic Game of the Year" award. Enjoyed because of its 'arcade' feel, side scrolling adventures, quirky music and exceptional graphics, it is a shame that the game wasn't updated for OS X.

Art Design

Below are some examples of artwork I have created. There is an example of a poster that I created for the Advanced Technology Teaching Research Unit that I ran at Massey University, as well as some banners that were used for Department websites within the College of Business, a design of page for an Information Systems course, as well as the design version of my personal home page (a previous version) before it was then converted and delivered as a Flash-based website.
